When Jesus walked the earth, He made a remarkable statement in John 16:7, saying that it was to our advantage that He went away. This statement may seem puzzling at first, but as we delve deeper into the significance and working of the Holy Spirit, we begin to understand why His presence in our lives is so essential and beneficial.
Jesus Came to Earth for a Specific Purpose
Jesus, in his earthly form, could only exist in one location at a time and had a finite lifespan. He came to Earth for a specific purpose, which was to bring about change within a limited timeframe.
By defeating the devil and serving as a sacrifice for humanity, Jesus ensured our freedom today.
Additionally, Jesus paved the way for the Holy Spirit, who transcends time and can dwell within each of us continuously. While Jesus no longer walks the Earth physically, he reigns eternally alongside the Father.
Understanding the Holy Trinity means recognizing that God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one. Thus, if the Holy Spirit resides in us, so do Jesus and the Father. Consequently, if Jesus dwells within us through the Holy Spirit, we are spiritually united with him in the heavenly realm, elevated and not diminished.
Satan, once the ruler of the spiritual realm, is now beneath us, serving as our footstool.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Before His crucifixion, Jesus promised His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them forever (John 14:16). This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers, empowering them for their mission and ministry.
The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an impersonal entity; He is the third person of the Trinity, fully God. He is our Comforter, Counselor, and Guide (John 14:16). The Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives brings numerous advantages and blessings that we can experience today.
1. Conviction and Guidance
One of the primary roles of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). He helps us recognize our need for a Savior and guides us in the path of righteousness. The Holy Spirit illuminates the Word of God, helping us understand its truths and applying them to our lives.
Through the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can make wise decisions, discern truth from falsehood, and navigate the complexities of life. He leads us into all truth, providing us with spiritual insight and understanding.
2. Empowerment and Transformation
The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a victorious Christian life. He equips us with spiritual gifts, enabling us to serve and edify others within the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7). The Holy Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
Furthermore, the Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome the struggles and temptations we face. He helps us resist sin and walk in obedience to God’s commands. Through His work in us, we are transformed into the image of Christ, growing in holiness and becoming more like Him.
3. Intimacy with God
The Holy Spirit deepens our relationship with God. He dwells within us, making our bodies His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Through the Holy Spirit, we have direct access to God the Father, enabling us to commune with Him in prayer and experience His presence in our lives.
As we yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading, He fills us with His love, joy, and peace. He brings us into a place of intimacy and fellowship with God, refreshing and renewing our spirits. The Holy Spirit assures us of our identity as children of God, comforting us in times of doubt or uncertainty.
4. Unity and Community
The Holy Spirit unifies believers and builds the body of Christ. He empowers us to love one another, to serve selflessly, and to bear each other’s burdens. Through the Holy Spirit’s work, we experience a sense of belonging and find support and encouragement within the community of believers.
The Holy Spirit also equips us to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. He gives us boldness and effectiveness in our witness, drawing people to God’s saving grace. The Holy Spirit empowers the Church to fulfill its mission of making disciples and advancing the kingdom of God.
Conclusion
The Holy Spirit is not just a nice addition to our lives; He is an essential and indispensable part of our relationship with God. His presence brings conviction, guidance, empowerment, and intimacy with God. The Holy Spirit unifies believers and equips us for service and mission.
As we recognize the advantages of the Holy Spirit, let us continually seek His presence and yield to His leading. May we embrace the fullness of His work in our lives and allow Him to transform us into the image of Christ.
