Are We Servants of God or Children of God?
As Christian born-again believers, it is natural to wonder about our relationship with God and how we are identified in His eyes. One verse that often comes to mind is 1 John 3:1, which states, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” This verse clearly emphasizes our identity as children of God, but does that mean we are not also servants of God? Let’s delve deeper into this topic and explore the beautiful tension between being both servants and children of God.
Children of God: Embracing Our Identity
When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are born again into God’s family. We become His children, adopted into His divine household. This incredible truth is a testament to God’s love for us. As His children, we have a unique and intimate relationship with Him. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing that we are loved, accepted, and cherished.
Being children of God means that we have a heavenly Father who cares for us deeply. Just as earthly parents provide for the needs of their children, our Heavenly Father takes care of us. He provides us with spiritual nourishment, guidance, and protection. We can find comfort in knowing that we are never alone, for God is always with us.
Our identity as children of God also comes with certain privileges. We have access to the Father’s wisdom, love, and grace. We can experience His peace and joy in our lives. Moreover, we have the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ. This identity brings us great joy and security, knowing that we are part of God’s family.
Servants of God: Embracing Our Calling
While being children of God is a beautiful aspect of our identity, we must also recognize that we are called to be servants of God. Throughout the Bible, we see numerous examples of individuals who willingly served God and His purposes. Jesus Himself set the ultimate example of servanthood when He washed the disciples’ feet and said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15).
As servants of God, we are called to follow Jesus’ example and serve others selflessly. We are called to love our neighbors, show compassion to the needy, and share the good news of salvation with those who have not yet heard it. Our service to God is an expression of our love and gratitude for all that He has done for us.
Being a servant of God does not diminish our identity as children; rather, it complements it. Just as Jesus, the Son of God, came to serve, we too are called to serve. Our service is an act of worship and obedience to our Heavenly Father. It is through our service that we can bring glory to God and make a positive impact on the world around us.
Living as Both Servants and Children of God
So, are we servants of God or children of God? The answer is that we are both. Our identity as children of God gives us a firm foundation and a sense of belonging. It reminds us of the love and grace that God has lavished upon us. On the other hand, our calling as servants of God challenges us to live out our faith and make a difference in the world.
Living as both servants and children of God requires a balance. We need to embrace our identity as children and find our security and significance in God’s love for us. At the same time, we need to actively serve God and others, using our gifts and talents for His glory.
Let us remember that being a child of God is not just a title; it is a call to live a transformed life. As children of God, we are called to love, serve, and reflect the character of our Heavenly Father. May we embrace our identity as both servants and children, and may our lives be a testimony to God’s love and grace.
